Description: About the Program:
Managing succession in a family-owned business can be fraught with conflict. Successors often are chosen in accordance with family and ownership considerations rather than competence. The result can be bad business decisions and inertia which destroys business value.
Ed will share a case study that tells the story of how an integrated process uncovered hidden value and took a family owned business from stagnation to a successful sale. This approach allowed three family branches to agree on a transition process to sell business assets that were essentially insolvent, and to shift to redeveloping their underperforming real estate assets. Once a consensus was achieved, a team of legal, accounting, M&A, and real estate professionals were assembled and managed to focus on the best interests of the client. The integrated process helped the transition team avoid the siloing and narrow transaction focus that can plague business transition and sale cases.
